Starting a business with no money means something different for everyone. No money often translates into discretionary funds. It’s money you can invest without taking out a loan, tapping into your line of credit or credit card.
No money might mean you plan to invest other people’s money rather than your own.

Maybe rather than looking for a business to start with no money, there are better and more useful questions to ask?
Alternative Questions To Consider
Half the battle in any inquiry is asking the right questions. Some alternate questions to consider include:
Is this a business where:
- I don’t have to invent anything
- there’s significant demand for the offering
- there’s limited competition
- there’s potential to grow and scale
- it’s a good fit for me and my personal goals
- costs are low, and margins are high
- the business is easy to explain, refer to others and sell
- I’m passionate about the business purpose and will stay fully engaged for years
Or is this a side-hustle:
- with low up-front costs
- where I can keep my day job
- where I can make enough money to make it worth my time
- where I already have the skills and equipment
- where there’s pent-up demand for the offering
- with limited certification, regulatory or insurance requirements
In both scenarios, you’re looking to be as purposeful. strategic, and selective as you can.
Critical Self-direction Questions
Perhaps more important than selecting a business is getting clear on your reasons and objectives for starting a business. Without first being clear on why, it’s nearly impossible to make a good choice.
Without knowing your reasons and objectives, you’re likely to get into a business that sparks a passing interest rather than one that makes good financial sense.
Clarifying questions to consider:
- Why do I want to start a business?
- Do I want staff, or is this more about lifestyle and self-employment?
- Do I have the communication skills to direct and manage others?
- Am I looking for time flexibility?
- Am I okay with working behind a desk, or do I need to be outside?
- Do I want to work from home, a physical location or on-site with customers?
- What businesses do I already understand and have experience in?
- Is my partner on board for this marathon rollercoaster ride?
- How much money do I need each month to live?
- How much financial risk am I willing to take on?
- How much money can I invest?
- How much time can I commit to this venture each week?
- Can I keep my day job until this business cash flows?
- What skills will I need to develop, and am I willing to learn?

One way to get strategic with your business trajectory is to land a trusted adviser in the form of a mentor. Mentoring can take many forms, such as a one-on-one relationship or a mentoring circle within an organization. The best mentor-mentee relationships involve two-way learning and reciprocation.
Mentors help professionals feel more engaged, derive more meaning from their careers, and grow their businesses. According to the Small Business Administration, small business owners who receive three or more hours of mentoring report higher revenues and increased growth.

Video is a great way to engage with multiple audiences. Consider creating videos to announce new products or services to your current customers. So now you know why video is an important tool to use when marketing your small business. You also know which audiences would benefit from seeing your videos. Now let’s discuss some best practices when it comes to creating video content.
- – Practice makes perfect. It may take a little while, but the more you practice, the more comfortable you will become being on camera. Seth Silvers manages a Facebook Group for entrepreneurs that encourages you to get comfortable in front of the camera with his 10 Day Live Storytelling Challenge.
- – Tell stories. Like every good story, your video should have a beginning, middle and end. Use your voice to showcase the passion you have for your business and your unique qualities.
- – Don’t forget your CTA. At the end of each video include a call to action. If a viewer has questions, where can they reach you? If they want to see more videos that you’ve created, have you included a way to do so?
- – Be authentic. You could spend thousands of dollars on production of your video, but if your message lacks authenticity your videos won’t resonate with viewers. Imagine you are talking to just one person. This perspective forces you to have a very clear purpose of your video and your target audience.
- – Get creative and have fun!
Depending on your budget, comfort with technology and access to equipment, you may decide to produce your video content in a few different ways.
At the higher end of marketing spend is to hire a professional videographer to record and produce your content. While this can be expensive, it can also create a high-quality end product. There are video production companies that will take on low-budget projects, so do your research in your local area and don’t be afraid to share your budget when interviewing prospective video partners.
Another option is to reach out to independent producers. There are websites dedicated to finding freelance producers/videographers and you can also check Craigslist. Ask contractors that you are considering if they shoot and edit their work. What kind of editing software do they use? What type of camera do they typically use?
Maybe you’ve decided to take a DIY approach to your video content creation. Marketing videos are no longer a luxury, they are a necessity, so don’t let a small (or non-existent?) budget prevent you from producing your own content on your smart phone.

Reinventing Entrepreneurship: Focus on Making a Difference and You’ll Make Plenty of Money
We entrepreneurs want to make plenty of money – but not at all costs. Entrepreneurship is about pushing ourselves to be better than we were yesterday, for the most of us. The definition of entrepreneurship focuses primarily on risk and initiative rather than the accumulation of wealth. Most of us won’t become billionaires, but we can still all make a positive difference in the world and make plenty of money at the same time.
Are you giving back? You can do so in a number of ways. It could be financial, such as donating to a favourite cause or charity. Or you could give the gift of your time.
Has someone provided some assistance to you that resulted in the growth of your business? Belonging to communities related to your business interest on social media is a great way to give back and build your business at the same time. People will often seek help for a business problem in the form of a question. You can provide an answer to their question to help them out and be seen by others as an expert in your field. Direct mail post cards are still a very effective method of advertising in this online world we live. Small businesses to large corporations still market with them because they work. Think of the mail you receive. You’ve probably opened your mail box recently to find offers from fast food restaurants, real estate agents, car dealerships or home improvement companies. You may have received a mailing for a small business opportunity because you’re on a mailing list. When you’re holding a post card chances are pretty good you’re also reading it!
Post cards are an inexpensive way to reach your target audience. In direct mail marketing the more tightly you specify your mailing list, the better your response. Mailing list companies can be found by doing an online search or even by using a hard copy of a business phone directory. Lists are sold for a single use only. Of course you can also compile your own list as well for free if you have the time. Make sure you have the answers to the following questions before using a list: How old is the list? You want to be certain the name and address information is correct. How many names are available? Can you specify only specific geographical areas? How were the names secured? Were they compiled from telephone directories, a trade association or subscription list? A list from a phone directory may not be as current.
What’s a good response to a single mailing? Most people want a hard number like 2%, 5% or 10%. A successful mailing is one that makes money. One new customer can generate thousands of dollars for your business. Typically 1% to 2% would be considered a successful mailing. Depending on the size of your mailing, you can either do it yourself or hand the job over to a direct mail shop. They can print, affix postage and mail it for you for a reasonable cost. I’ve personally revised the copy on my post cards many times through trial and error to their current form. They work hard to generate thousands of dollars in sales because I follow a few simple rules: Don’t use cheap paper. Go for a 80 pound stock. Since you can get 2 or 3 cards from a single sheet, go for the quality stuff. Don’t use glossy paper. Glossy cards aren’t handled well by the post office sorting machines and will often get mangled or destroyed.
A direct mail campaign is not one mailing, but rather a series of mailings. You need to contact your prospective customer usually more than once to make a sale. This applies to all your marketing methods. A marketing campaign is a sustained effort over time, so be consistent with your advertising.

It’s better to stick to a more conversational tone, although obviously you need to match your writing style to the style that’s appropriate for your offer or announcement, and of course for your readers. Be sure of exactly what the leaflet has to achieve, and don’t expect it to achieve more than one main objective with perhaps 3 or 4 subsidiary ones.

It’s unfortunate we don’t often see public service announcements like this anymore. If you grew up in the 70’s like I did you probably remember seeing this on television. Same with the animated Litter Bug or Smokey Bear. I’ve been in the commercial litter cleanup business for over 30 years. One thing that doesn’t change is the attitude of many people who think it’s acceptable to dump the litter from their vehicle onto the parking lot, toss their empty drink cups wherever they please or flick their cigarette butt onto the sidewalk even though a receptacle is only steps away.
